Both classic and timeless the Coptic binding is a structure well loved by
traditional bookbinders and contemporary book artists alike. We will explore
several ways to construct a Coptic binding, using a variety of materials for
covers and inside pages. Some binding experience helpful, but avid beginners
are welcome. You can expect to leave the workshop with a comprehensive
understanding of the structure and many completed books perfectly suited for
journal, sketchbook, or album usage. Materials fee: $35.

Margaret Kessler, MFA in Book Arts and Printmaking from The University of
the Arts in Philadelphia, has considerable experience in binding, paper
engineering and various printmaking processes. An avid printer, book artist,
sculptor and creative writer, her work has been exhibited internationally
and is present in the collections of several private institutions.

Ms Kessler will also teach a class at the Mendocino Art Center this fall on
Innovative Boxes, Enclosures, & Insets.
Nov. 15-16, 2003. Tuition: $160. Materials fee: 20. F03T810
