[BKARTS] Heavy Metal: Metals and the Book Arts

Think all books are made of paper? Think again.

The Jaffe Book Arts Collection's Atrium Gallery presents "Heavy Metal:
Metals & the Book Arts." This impressive exhibit features books like
"Brooklyn Bridge: A Love Song," by Don Glaister (Foolsgold Press, 2002),
made of silkscreened and painted aluminum pages, bound in leather and
sanded aluminum. Or "Ghost Diary" by Maureen Cummins (2003), a glass and
metal book hauntingly illustrated with found vintage glass negatives.
"Defensive Book" by Coriander Riesbord (Skeptical Press, 1993) is
letterpress printed on paper infused with metal straight pins, while "Les
Fleurs Animees" by J.J. Grandville (Garnier Freres, 1867), provides an
example of one of the more traditional uses of metals in the book arts:
exquisite gilt edging. Then there's "Miss Gowanus" by Meg Belichick (1996),
which features letterpress-printed rubber pages and historic photographs,
bound in a cover of soft, malleable lead--an altogether weird combination
of sensory elements: this book looks odd, smells odd, and feels totally

Thirty two other books--all of them somehow incorporating metal--complete
the exhibit, which runs through October 5, 2003, here at the Jaffe Atrium
Book Arts Gallery at Florida Atlantic University, 777 Glades Road in Boca
Raton, third floor east of the Wimberly Library. Though an appointment is
necessary to view books at the Jaffe Collection, the gallery is open to the
public and available anytime during regular library hours. For current
hours, please consult the Wimberly Library website: www.fau.edu/library, or
call the library at 561 297 6911.

And though I did consider using a good old fashioned blackletter type face
for the exhibit signing (like the ones I saw on all those headbanger tee
shirts at Deerfield Beach High School in the early 1980s), I managed to
restrain myself.

Rock on,
