It certainly IS legal. You own the books. Do as you wish with them. As for
the statistics; as long as you do not attribute them to the author of the book,
there is no problem.  American copyright law is pretty simple and clear-cut.
One of the few U.S. laws that are.

If you need addition information, you may get a free publication from the
Library of Congress Copyright Office.
