NEXUS PRESS RESUMES BOOK SALES OPERATIONS
UNDER THE DIRECTION OF FRIENDS OF NEXUS PRESS

ATLANTA (October 6, 2003) -- The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center
(The Contemporary) is pleased to announce that Nexus Press, its
experimental offset artist book press, has resumed book sales
operations under the direction of a volunteer group, Friends of
Nexus Press (FONP). At a June 24 board of directors meeting, board
members voted to give FONP six months to begin implementing plans to
make the Press economically viable. These plans include
implementing a new business model, launching a new website designed
to encourage sales, developing an aggressive marketing program and
assuming book order fulfillment operations. A new financial
structure developed with The Contemporary enables the Press to
accept donations on its own behalf.

Since February, the FONP has held or sponsored a number of events.
In June 2003, FONP, with the support of the Atlanta College of Art
Library and Gainesville College, held a successful workshop on
artists' books and book making, and other workshops are currently
being planned. The same month, FONP also co-sponsored the launch of
Ruth Laxson's latest book, A Hundred Years of: Lex Flex, with the
Marcia Wood Gallery. Plans for resumption of the well-known Nexus
Press residency programs and artist-initiated projects are in
process, with the goal of resuming these programs later in 2004.

In addition, FONP, working with the development staff at the
Contemporary, will be seeking focused grant funding to support a new
business model, permanent staffing and collaborative links with
other institutions in the months ahead

FONP is comprised of former directors of the press, collectors,
artists and other interested parties.

###
As a member of Friends of Nexus Press, I am delighted that the Press
is continuing and will keep the list informed about future plans for
the Press.
