Digital Relief:

Photopolymer offers a way to apply current typesetting and imaging
technologies to the art of letterpress. Participants print type,
illustrations, or halftone images using biodegradable, light sensitive
plates. Those with computer or darkroom experience produce photographic
images and typographic pieces. Newcomers produce prints from hand drawn
images. Instructor Marnie Powers-Torrey holds an MFA in photography,
teaches classes in letterpress printing, and is Book Arts Studio

Print and Run:
Collaborative Letterpress
November 7th & 8th, Friday & Saturday, 9:00 to 5:00

This short workshop is long on surprise. Participants print an edition
of spontaneous, inspired text. Beginning and ending with
problem-solving, participants choose typefaces, set type, learn and
apply elementary mechanics of printing, and wrap it all up with
take-home binding instructions. Classic conundrums of printing are
examined. No letterpress experience is necessary, although those with
printing knowledge find answers to oft-asked questions. Limited to
twelve participants. Instructor Mary Laird holds an MFA from the
University of Wisconsin and has been producing letterpress books since
1969. She has taught book arts at San Francisco State University, Kala
Institute, and San Francisco Center for the Book.
