[BKARTS] For the Love of Books 2003 at the Jaffe Book Arts Collection

The Jaffe Book Arts Collection at Florida Atlantic University's Wimberly
Library is pleased to announce the winner of this year's book arts
competition for members of the South Florida Calligraphy Guild: Ginger
Meidel of Saint Petersburg, Florida, was awarded the Jaffe Purchase Prize
for her one of a kind book, "Book of Jonah" (gouache, ink and watercolor on
paper, hand lettered; mixed media on pastepapers; mixed media case
binding). The book will have its permanent home at the Jaffe Collection.

Other prize winners include Marilyn Gray (Second Prize, awarded by the
Guild) for her one of a kind book, "Dreaming;" Barbara Brandt (Third Prize,
awarded by the Guild) for her one of a kind book, "Bookmobile: Foreign Book
Section;" Marilynn Gladstone (Honorable Mention, awarded by the Guild) for
her one of a kind book, "La Poesia/Poetry;" and Gloria Eckart (Honorable
Mention, awarded by the Jaffe Collection) for her one of a kind book, "A

The competition, "For the Love of Books," is a biennial competition
designed to inspire regional calligraphers to venture further into the book
arts. The competition began in 2001, and Ginger Meidel won the Jaffe
Purchase Prize that year, as well, for her book "Psalm 37." Calligraphers
in South Florida have two years ahead of them to produce bookworks for the

The winning entries and all of the books entered are currently on display
at the Jaffe Book Arts Atrium Gallery, Third Floor East of the Wimberly
Library at Florida Atlantic University, 777 Glades Road in Boca Raton,
through December 15, 2003. Though an appointment is necessary to view books
at the collection, the gallery is open to the public and available anytime
during regular library hours (posted at
