[BKARTS] LunaSea Press preparing to launch HYSTERIA

LunaSea Press is excitedly preparing to launch our first book--Hysteria: An
Anthology of Poetry, Prose, and Visual Art on the Subject of Women?s Mental
Health. LunaSea was founded in 2001, based on the belief in the powerful
relationship between art and social activism for women?s rights. The mission
of the press is to publish limited edition hand-bound books that focus on
women?s issues and to donate proceeds from sales to organizations that
assist women in need.

Hysteria is a collection of work that responds to some unsettling statistics
published by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). According to
NIMH, ?one of the most consistently determined risk factors for depression
is female gender.? In the US nearly twice as many women (12%) as men (6.6%)
are affected by a depressive disorder each year. Their research has shown
that ?psychosocial factors, such as multiple roles in the home and at work
and the increased likelihood of women to be poor, at risk for violence and
abuse, and raising children alone, also plays a role in the development of
depression.? Women also outnumber men significantly in the amount of
reported anxiety disorders, eating disorders, and schizophrenia.

Proceeds from Hysteria will benefit MADRE. Founded in 1983, MADRE is an
international women?s human rights organization that works in partnership
with women?s community-based groups in conflict areas worldwide. Their
programs address issues of sustainable development, community improvement
and women?s health, violence and war, discrimination and racism,
self-determination and collective rights, women?s leadership development,
and human rights education. (www.madre.org)
