There IS another way: Beg, borrow or buy a copy of "Smith's Sewing Single
Sheets: non-adhesive binding Volume IV, by KeithA. Smith, ISBN 09637682-8-X.
$30 at Amazon

You will find instructions for binding your book using a method, similar to
Coptic binding, which allows the book to be opened flat. If the holes
already drilled for the spiral binding aren't too large, you may be able to
use them selectively in the new binding.
