I was saddened to learn of Joanne Sonnichsen's passing. I was a member of
The Hand Bookbinders of California from 1991 to 1999 and had many
conversations with Joanne during that time. A few months ago, I wanted to
ask her a question but, when I called, she was sleeping and I was told she
was ill.

She wrote an essay for the Guild of Book Workers several years ago, "Written
to Last, Built to Self-destruct," that should be read by everyone interested
in bookbinding. I have a copy but hesitate to send it to the list for fear
of copyright infringement. Perhaps the GBW would authorize its reprinting on
this site.

I will miss Joanne.
