You are right about the mediocre quality of Tandy leather. But, I think the
leather that you had that tore so easily was from the belly portion of the skin
which is always the weakest leather. You may also have purchased a split.
They are exceedingly weak. It is easy to fool the leather buyer with finished
splits. They look just like top grain leather when they both have an embossed
grain.  Another guess was that you purchased a sheepskin.  Sheepskin often has a
luxurious feel. But, as a cover material is absolute crap. It's good for
title labels and little else.
