I think the trick may be that you must stir over a longer period, until the
solution is completely cooled off, and even then perhaps for a couple of
hours after that.
Even though your solution appears clear within 15 minutes, there are still
undissolved particles of methocel, which will remain that way until some
time period *after* the mix has cooled. When you stop stirring too soon,
these settle to the bottom, and when they finally do fully dissolve, this
produces a thick layer of glop at the bottom of the vessel.
