2003 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the death of P. Neville Barnett, a New Zealand-born Australian who made major international contributions to knowledge in the fields of bookplates and Japanese woodblock prints. Over a period of more than two decades, from 1930 onwards, he was also the instigator and designer of an unequalled series of finely printed books and brochures on his two pet subjects. To John Gartner, the eminent Melbourne bookplate collector, typographer and Hawthorn Press owner, Barnett was ‘ a genius’. Los Angeles Bookplate Association International vice-president Clare Ryan Talbot called him the ‘maestro of ex libris’.

Barnett’s enthusiasm was infectious and as a result of his books, articles and increasingly global personal networks, he successfully promoted public interest in bookplates particularly. Unfortunately, the onset of the Second World War effectively short-circuited his efforts to raise awareness of the beauty and meaning of traditional Japanese prints. As a tribute to Barnett, the book recalls these aspects of his work, which are in danger of being forgotten by all but the dedicated few.
