Solutions, when given as a percentage, ought to state whether they are
weight/volume (w/v) or volume per volume (v/v).  People often drop this
from the percentage, along with units.  Rather than rely on volume
measures of solids, which are inaccurate (think of a tablespoon of gold
versus a tablespoon of ashes) it is best to weigh them.
A 10% solution of methyl cellulose would be 10 grams in water, measuring
up to 100ml.
