Alum has been used in the past to retard spoilage in paste, and
to clarify the water which has been used in papermills during
the papermaking process.

It is not a good additive. It makes paste (and water) somewhat
acidic. In time, this will cause problems.

The problems may not become evident in your lifetime, but they
will become evident over time. Why make problems for those who
come after you?

It does not take much time to make paste.

Just a thought.
