Scott McCarney is conducting a workshop for Shakerag Workshops, in Sewanee,
TN, entitled "Digital Artists' Books." Complete information about the
workshop can be seen at the Shakerag Workshops website -- www.shakerag.org.
The workshop will be held from June 20-25, 2004. Tuition for the week-long
workshop is $375; room and board is $300. McCarney writes about his class:
"The computer is an innovative tool for reconsidering the nature of
the written word and graphic expression. Artists' books are characterized by
unusual formats and content: they use the written word and pictorial image
to expand upon and rearrange the notion of what a book is. This workshop
combines the computer's ability to bring varied information together in
virtual space with the book's inherent display in real time and physical
space. Through this process the book becomes a wondrous site for the
collection, organization, and presentation of information from the unique
perspective of the artist. A variety of innovative formats and traditional
book-binding techniques will be used in tandem with current publishing and
imaging software."
Familiarity with the MacintoshOS and Photoshop is necessary. An optional
Tech Tutorial will be available on Sunday afternoon to provide an
introduction to SAS Mac lab and Photoshop basics (additional fee: $40).
Scott McCarney holds a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University, and an MFA
in Photography from the University of Buffalo/Visual Studies Workshop. He
has taught classes and workshops in design and bookbinding since the
mid-1980's in colleges and art centers around the world.
