===============

          Material as Metaphor
    A slide lecture by Richard Minsky

             April 8, 7:30 p.m.

Steinberg Hall Auditorium, Washington University
(near Forsyth & Skinker, 2nd building west of intersection)

A book?s physical structure and materials can add a tactile, sensual
dimension to the reading experience, as no one knows better than Richard
Minsky, a pioneer in the field of book arts. He will show slides and
discuss the evolution of his work over 40 years, from letterpress printing
and traditional leather bookbinding to digital incunabula.

Minsky founded The Center for Book Arts (in NYC), where, for the first
time, contemporary book art was displayed in an active studio with classes
and workshops. This model has been copied across the U.S. and abroad and
stimulated the rapid growth of the Book Art Movement.

Art critic Rose Slivka writes, ?Minsky is the foremost American exponent of
modern bookbinding as the art of amplification on the book, container of
language and ideas, an art other than its own material form. . . Minsky
enlarges the scope and meanings of the book.?

This event is free and open to the public.
