It could be oversewing, bound by
a library binder. Technically called the
oversewn method of leaf attachment.
The loose leaves are
made into "sections" about 1/8th inch in thickness,
sewn on  machine.  The "S-ing" is the thread
from one section linking to the next.  Not having a
photo to look at, but I bet the "S"s are all
about the same size and in uniform rows across
the spine.  And perhaps one row is of a different
color thread? Thats my guess: oversewn.
