Yes, but one lays a book in the press, thus the transitive rather than
intransitive verb (if one wishes to show more familiarity with English
grammar).

However, the place I bought mine from called it a Cutting and Laying Press
(http://www.hewit.com/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Wooden_Equipment_22.html),
and they are certainly familiar with the subject of bookbinding.
