These techniques would be no different with a higher quality board.

When binders board is made, a screen mould picks up the pulp from the tank to
form the sheet. It makes several passes; each one bearing a layer of the
board being made. The number of these layers determines the thickness of the
board. If there is not enough sizing, these layers will separate

Being too dry makes the board weak and it draws too much water out of the
adhesive being applied. Thus the adhesive begins to dry  before the board is in
place and rubbed down. Often this dryness causes the surface of the board to
come off as you apply the adhesive.
