I think that it is important to remember that one of the (endless variety
of) things that artists do is comment on the world around them.  While it
may seem "nutty" to drink beer with human DNA or make art with e-coli, it
seems equally nutty to me that private pharmaceutical enterprises and
bioengineering firms are patenting genetically modified genes.  Of course,
these companies have tremendous amounts of financial backing as well as the
support of such federal agencies as the FDA, so their activities must be
perfectly legit, right?  well, maybe not.  I'm not toally comfortable with
the idea of a future of corporate controlled genetics.  I actually think
that such a scenerio is "nuts."  And I applaud artists, such as Mr. Kurtz
and the Critical Art Ensemble, who address these contemporary issues in
creative and interesting ways.
