Hatch Show Print Poster Workshop
July 14
What do you think your chances are of getting to print extraordinarily
cool letterpress posters in the legendary Hatch Show Print shop in
Nashville under the direction of Hatch manager, Jim Sherraden? You got
it: Zip. But would you settle for Jim, some of Hatch's historic
illustration wood cuts, and a day in the SVC letterpress shop right
here in Seattle? Done! You’ll work with Jim to produce a poster, to be
printed on SVC’s Vandercook cylinder presses. He'll even let you print
a T-shirt or two if you bring them. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity to work shoulder-to-shoulder with one of the key players in
the history of graphic design & the music industry. Space is limited to
12 students so early registration is strongly advised.
Hatch Show Print Hoedown at the Showbox
July 15
Hank Williams, Cab Calloway, and Emmylou Harris have one thing in
common. They all turned to Nashville’s Hatch Show Print to design and
print promotional posters. Established in 1879, Hatch not only
developed a graphic design style that’s been widely emulated, they’re
also leading the charge to preserve the traditional art of letterpress
printing. Like to know more? You will after hearing Jim Sherraden,
Hatch’s manager, speak at the Showbox at 7 p.m. You’ll also get a
chance to schmooze with Jim, have him sign a copy of his book, purchase
some of Hatch’s posters at obscenely low prices, and then you can stick
around to do-si-do to the music of Supersuckers frontman, Eddy
Spaghetti, and Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter.
Letterpress Printing: Posters
Tuesdays, June 29-August 31
In this course students of all levels will create posters (or
broadsides, as they're sometimes known) using SVC's collection of lead
and wood type and Vandercook cylinder letterpresses. Beginning students
will learn how to compose type by hand, create linoleum cuts, and
operate the presses, while advanced students will create more elaborate
pieces. We'll also submerge ourselves in the history and terminology of
letterpress and get to know the local printing community through guest
lectures and studio tours.
Letterpress Printing in a Day
August 12
Does the warm summer air have you longing to get away from your daily
routine? This workshop could be the antidote you're looking for,
whether you're an experienced printer or just letterpress-curious.
We'll spend a relaxing summer day playing with the shop's collection of
vintage wood type and imagery and explore the serendipitous effects of
printing multiple colors overtop one another. Learn how to mix colors,
hand-ink a type form, and produce textures and patinas that are unique
to letterpress. This workshop is for those who'd just like to have some
fun playing on press; those looking to get into the intricacies of the
craft should consider SVC's more in-depth 10-week letterpress posters
class.
