CRIMEWATCH UK has joined the hunt for the library "ripper" believed
to have stolen £100,000 of rare maps from the National Library of
Wales in Aberystwyth.

The BBC's crime-busting programme issued an appeal for information on
Peter Bellwood - on Scotland Yard's 10 most wanted list - during its
20th anniversary programme on Tuesday night.

Yesterday Dyfed-Powys Police confirmed it received calls as a result
of the appeal. The elusive Peter Bellwood is Britain's most wanted
art thief, although his targets are not galleries but libraries.

It is estimated he may have taken 4,500 rare maps from libraries
across Europe.

He is known to have visited the National Library of Wales in
Aberystwyth on seven occasions during 2000 and 2001.

Over a period of about 18 months it is thought Bellwood travelled
around the UK and used a hobby knife to remove more than 1,000
plates, illustrations and prints from around a dozen libraries.

He made no attempt to disguise his appearance, signing in under his
own name and proceeding directly to the map room.

Peter Joseph Bellwood is 50-years-old, 5'10" and slim build, he wears
glasses, smart dresser, and has mousey brown or dyed blonde hair,
which may be short or long.

Bellwood was jailed for four years in 1996 for stealing hundreds of
illustrations from 12 British libraries valued at £289,000. * The
incident room number for Dyfed Powys police is 01970 612791 Ext 326.
