Often, people are suspicious of involving themselves in artists' "projects,"
out of fear (sometimes grounded) that they will be used and get nothing in
return. A friend who often does installations that require participation from
those who did not originally conceive her projects gave me this advice: give them
something first - teach something. It needn't be something large (you don't
have to teach them how to create their own fine press book), but it should be
something genuine that relates to what you have in mind for the project. Many
collaborations emerge from a teaching situations. If you create an atmopsphere
that is inclusive and accepting while you are teaching them, the women may, of
themselves, imagine what they can do together. It might not be what you
