[BKARTS] Sunken Cords and Endpaper Construction

I've been studying and making a model of a book with sunken cords and have a question on how to construct the endpapers.
I tried making hooked endpapers, both with a visible and invisible hinge, but by the time the groove for the cord is deep enough to just nick the inner fold of the sections, the sunken cord and sewing becomes visible between the flyleaf and the board paper.
How does one, if it's even possible, keep the cord and sewing from showing between the flyleaf/s and the board paper?
What is the the best construction of endpapers for this type of binding (what was used historically)?
Any thoughts are most welcome.
