As Peter mentioned, adding a piece of bookboard works great. When I
drill holes in a large stack of papers, I place them between 2 pieces of
scrap wood, clamp the whole thing really tight, then drill. Works like a

In addition to clamping, it helps to put a piece of binders board on
each side of the textblock to be drilled. This will result in clean
drilled holes, without the chewed up stuff one would normally get.
