The story is "History Lesson" aka "Expedition to Earth" by Arthur C.
Clarke. First published in Startling Stories 1949. Reprinted umpteen
times in umpteen collections, I got it in "The Collected Stories" (no
surprise there..), Gollancz 2000, and there are the date of the original
publication and also the dual titles.

(Source - got the book in my hand!)

I remember the story below very well and think about it
occasionally when considering the often dubious claims about
Mayan hieroglyphs. Can anyone help us with the title, author
and publication data?

I have been looking for a short story by Arthur C. Clarke that I read some years ago, can't recall the title but the story went something like this:

The only record of the mysterious earth people ends with the
portrait of a typical person, with grinning face and large
ears. Below it, in writing that will never be understood " A
Walt Disney Cartoon".
