Regarding engraved metal, there was a copper scroll found along with the
Dead Sea Scrolls.  While roughly 2000 years is not even close to eternity,
you might find it of interest to see a photo of how this scroll held up at:

This copper scroll (3Q15) is basically a guide to buried treasure.  If you
