A couple of additional suggestions:

- Make sure you allow the pasted paper time to fully expand; wait until
it's completely limp before working it over the joint and onto the
board. Then work it carefully with fingers through a piece of paper.

-As per Peter, James & Bruce: you need to allow more drying time before
closing the board. Half an hour isn't sufficient, even in a dry
atmosphere IMHO. Once it feels dry gently flex the joint and see if it wrinkles.

-Lastly, in your situation I might lay the pastedowns closed rather than
open, as one would a case binding.
