Artists? Books Marketing and Creative Production Survey
How you can help:
One of this survey?s aims is to publish a guide for book artists,
particularly those who have little experience of marketing their work. We
are asking established and new artists amongst others to fill in some forms
concerning this subject in order to obtain the views of as many people as
possible. If you would be willing to fill in the forms below, as
applicable, then it will really help to establish a wide picture of the
current situation and contribute to resolving some of the problems
experienced by book artists.
As there are a steadily increasing number of artists making books, the
subject has grown in many disciplines in the fine and graphic arts field.
There is little information available concerning the relationship between
artists? books and their potential marketing in the contemporary arena.
Stefan Szczelkun?s UK Artists Books: Marketing and Promotion Estamp,
London, 1993 and Simon Ford?s Artists? Books in UK and Eire Libraries
Estamp, London, 1992, were two useful studies published on the marketing
and promotion of the artist?s book in the UK. With the increased amount of
study interest and production of artists? books over recent years, a
contemporary survey will help to identify opportunities for new artists to
market their work and establish connections with both private collectors
and purchasing institutions.
In order for the field to extend its creative boundaries there needs to be
a system in place where developing artists can access the information
needed to distribute their work effectively to as wide an audience as
possible. To make the outcomes available to the widest possible audience we
will notify this field when we publish the results of this survey on our
website as a downloadable/printable document. (Or mail it to you if you
prefer).
There is a more direct link between the artist and the buyer in the field
of artists? books than any other art discipline. Many book artists are
unsure of the market potential of their work and this is particularly
difficult in their situation as they are directly responsible for
interacting with the purchaser. The creative quality and pricing structures
will obviously differ between larger editions and unique hand made works,
but it may be possible to establish and resolve some marketing problems for
book artists and their audience as a result of this survey.
The whole survey will compare the different methods used by artists for
distributing their work within this field, and offer a series of case
studies of both fledging and established book artists. The survey will also
compare specific collection criteria in individual museums and institutions
to investigate if their selection policies affect the artist?s book market
and/or the creative output of individual artists. We will also survey
exhibitors and purchasers at artist?s book fairs and specialist events in
order to establish the existing position of the market audience.
In order to survey the widest possible cross section we have made separate
questionnaires here for: artists, collectors, curators etc. We would be
very grateful if you could share your experiences by filling in the
appropriate form/s.
