Mackay City Council to present new national art prize in 2006

MACKAY City Council will present the first ever national Artists' Book
Prize in February next year during the Focus on Artists' Book program at
Artspace Mackay.

The Australian Artists' Book Prize will be an acquisitive award valued at
$3000, with the winning work being purchased for inclusion in Mackay City
Council's nationally significant Artists' Book Collection.

Mackay Mayor Julie Boyd said artists' books are books that have been
created as artworks.

"Mackay City Council holds one of the largest and most significant
collections of artists' books in Australia," Cr Boyd said.

"With more than 300 artists' books, Mackay's Artists' Book Collection is
one of the main attractions of Artspace Mackay, our award-winning regional
art gallery and museum.

"The creation of a new Artists' Book Prize will raise awareness of the
importance of our collection and will complement other Artspace Mackay
initiatives such as the Australian Artists' Book Forum, which has
attracted delegates from throughout the country.

"This will be the first ever national prize specifically for artists
working in the field of artists' books and will be a showcase for the best
artists' books in the country."

Commencing in February 2006, the Australian Artists' Book Prize will be
awarded biennially and aims to raise the profile of artists' books nationally.

Supplementary prizes will be awarded for regional artists and young or
emerging artists within this field.

Artspace Mackay Director Robert Heather said the regional art gallery was
committed to generating awareness of artists' books as an art form within
the broader community.

"The launch of this major national prize will raise Mackay's profile as a
leader in the area of artists' books and raise awareness and appreciation
for its nationally-significant Artists' Book Collection," Mr Heather said.

The announcement of the Australian Artists' Book Prize follows the recent
ratification of Mackay City Council's new Art Collection Policy, which
recognises the Artists' Book Collection as a major part of the City's art

The Artists' Book Collection includes works by Australian and
international artists working in the fields of artists' books, book art,
limited edition books and book-related artworks.

Further details about the Australian Artists' Book Prize will be available
at the 2nd Australian Artists' Books Forum, which is being held at
Artspace Mackay on Friday, 25 February 2005.

The forum will include presentations by leading artists, curators,
scholars, and academics working in the field of artists' books.

The Focus on Artists' Books program is an annual series of exhibitions,
master classes and activities that aim to stimulate critical dialogue
about artists' books and the book arts in Australia, provide professional
development opportunities for artists working in the field, and generate
broader community awareness of the art form.
