No, it's parallel with the sides of the roll - in otherwords, it goes the
entire length of the paper as it unrolls. To make sheets of short-grain -
e.g. grain that is parallel to the short side, you need paper wide enough to
allow for the long-dimension of your sheets to fit side to side on that
paper. See attachment.

What if you buy a roll of paper, like Epson enhanced matt, which
comes in a long roll? In that case, is the grain crosswise to the
length of the roll?
