[BKARTS] eBooks in Illinois Academic Libraries Conference

McKendree College, the Illinois Cooperative Collection
Management Program, and Southern Illinois University
Edwardsville are pleased to sponsor the eBooks in
Illinois Academic Libraries Conference, to be held at
the Chancellor Hotel in Champaign, Illinois on Monday,
March 7 and Tuesday, March 8. The conference will
feature ebook experts from around the country speaking

on such topics as: the industry overview: devices,
readers and formats; pricing, acquisition, access,
and integration with print resources; standards; free
vs. commercial texts; university press projects;
and the promotion of digital resources. Vendor
exhibits and showcases will be held Monday
afternoon and will be open to everyone. There are
outstanding attendance prizes totaling $30,000
including ebook collections and a variety of ebook
reading devices.

Bill Harroff, McKendree?s Reference & Information
Technologies Librarian, is the co-developer and
co-organizer of the event. ?It wasn?t long ago that
faculty were reluctant to use electronic journals and
now they only want them in this format,? explained
Harroff. ?How long do you think it will be until this
is also true of books? Ebooks are so much more than
just digital text. Campuses and libraries need to be
prepared to offer audio, multimedia and streaming
media ebooks. We?re pleased to have industry leaders
such as Lori Bell, Chet Grycz, Megan Fox,
Rick Lugg, Tom Peters and Mary Summerfield offering
their insights and solutions.? A recently announced
$5000 grant from the Illinois Cooperative Collection
Management Program, along with grant support from
McKendree and SIUE made the program possible.

Harroff was recently named an associate editor for the
peer reviewed publication, the International Journal
of the Book. He will be speaking at the Association of
College and Research Libraries? 12th National
Conference in Minneapolis April 7-10 and to the
Friends of Lovejoy Library on April 13. He and
Charlotte Johnson will also conduct a (r)Evolutionary
(e)Books workshop at the Lincoln Trails Library System
May 10. Harroff?s artwork is currently on display at
the Susan Hensel Gallery in Minneapolis from now until
April 28.
