[BKARTS] Bookbinding intensives in Ithaca

Bookbinding Intensive I:Cross Structure Workshop and Islamic Binding
Instructors: Margot Ecke and Michele Brown
Saturday and Sunday 10 am - 4 pm, and evenings 6 - 9 pm
April 16 and 17
$280 for non-associates/ $238 for associates of the shop (+ $40 for materials)

Cross Structures (day sessions with Margot Ecke) are non-adhesive bindings
with interlocking paper covers. Seven variations of this structure will be
taught in this two-day course and students are encouraged to experiment
with different types of decorative cover paper. Because the sewing on the
spine is often exposed, colored thread may be used to enhance the design of
each book. Cross structures open completely so that every part of the page
may be used , making these books perfect for sketching and journal
writing. This is a wonderful structure for students who like to have fun
with design. The class is suitable for all skill levels.

Islamic Binding (evening sessions with Michele Brown) is a simple binding
sewn with a chain stitch cased into a cover with a fore-edge flap. We will
use paper or colored Tyvek as the covering material over light-weight
board. This is a nice binding for journals.

Each workshop may be taken separately. Call to inquire. Also ask about
hotel, B&B and restaurant discounts for this weekend.

Binding with a Wrap-Around Box

$280 for non-associates/ $238 for associates of the shop (+ $40 for materials)

Coptic Binding (day sessions with Margot Ecke) will introduce students to a
book structure that dates back to 4th century Egypt. The Coptic binding
with wooden boards is a non-adhesive structure and is an ideal structure
for those who like to experiment with materials. The class will cover the
fundamentals of book construction: determining paper grain, folding and
trimming sections, as well as two types of sewing techniques. Students
will produce two books during the class and will discuss variations of the
Coptic structure. This class is suitable for all skill levels.

Evening sessions with Michele Brown will guide participants in creating
four Japanese bindings, each with a different sewing pattern, concluding
with making a box in the Japanese wrap-around style to hold them.

Each workshop may be taken separately. Call to inquire. Also ask about
hotel, B&B and restaurant discounts for this weekend.
