All Shook Up: Playful Books June 1 ? July 23, 2005 Opening Reception: Wednesday, June 1, 5:00 ? 7:30pm FREE and open to the public

Karen Hanmer?s handmade books tell stories as nostalgiac as those of childhood memories, family stories, and a loved one?s belongings, to the modern-day mundanity of punch cards and mile-long to-do lists. Hanmer designs her books to be interactive, and selects materials and methods of construction to elicit thoughts and emotions from the viewer. Exploiting the properties of weight, texture, opacity and sound, and the physical actions one must take to operate the book, Hanmer underscores the subject and meaning of her intricate constructions.

Workshop with the Artist:
Karen Hanmer will offer a special workshop in book making on Saturday, June 4 from 9:30am to 3:30pm at the Dublin Arts Center. All Shook Up: Layering Text and Image in the Flag Book Structure will show participants a unique book structure that can accommodate several complementary or contrasting narratives and images in one small book. The flag book is an interesting way to combine poetry, personal writings, family photographs or other artwork into a handmade book. Several of the artist?s flag books, seen in the gallery exhibition, will provide ideas and inspiration. Call (614) 889-7444 for details or to register. Cost for the workshop is $35 for members and $40 for non-members.
