All that has been said by others concerning why the jaws should be closed,
have their virtue.  However, my other half has just suggested that one
reason why they should be left closed, is because the gentle closed position
is the natural resting position of the press.  There are no stresses and
strains on any part of the mechanism.

Greg mentioned this when he said:

the weight of the upper suspended plate could cause the screw mechanism
inside the yoke to become stressed if the weight of that plate were not
supported by the
bottom plate.
