Another way to bevel is to use an English leather paring knife, or
equivalent like a French point, and cut that way. Then you can sand to make
a really beautiful transition. Sanding is my most unfavorite thing about
bookbinding, but it does beautiful things sometimes.

There is a picture of a board beveling machine in Harrild and Sons catalogue
of bookbinders machinery from 1892, reprinted in 1988 by The Guild of Craft
Bookworkers, Sydney AU. Or you can use a spokeshave or wood workers plane.
