[BKARTS] Summer courses at the Center

Summer greetings from the Center for Book Arts.

We have an extensive selection of courses coming up this summer,
including the following:

Wood Covered Bindings
Participants will be introduced to three structures based on
traditional bindings but substituting wood for book board and
book cloth as covers. We'll begin the week slowly and build on
our skills culminating with everyone completing three wood
covered books and leaving with the inspiration and skills to
create many more. No previous wood working experience is
necessary, just your creativity and a sense of adventure. Basic
bookbinding skills are required.
June 20- 24, Monday - Friday
Peter Madden $450/$475

Blade Maintenance
This one-day workshop is designed to give students a grounding in
the maintenance and use of the blades used in binding, including
English and French paring knives and plough blades.. This is
essential knowledge for all good bookbinders, and especially
recommended for students interested in Bookbinding II.
July 1 Friday, 10 am to 4pm
Gavin Dovey $125/ $140

Wood Engraving
Wood Engraving, developed in the late 18th Century by Thomas
Bewick, is perfectly suited for the illustration of text. The
engraved image, printed at the same time and on the same
equipment as type, harmonizes beautifully with text and is
capable of incredible detail. It can also stand alone as a
medium for artistic expression. Learn the basics of the craft,
and its modern adaptations. Engrave and print an edition on the
Center's Vandercook proof presses.
July 9 & 10 Saturday and Sunday, 10am - 4pm June Paris &
Barbara Henry $300/ $325

Vandercook Maintenance
Students will learn how to care for a Vandercook proof press.
Topics to be covered include press anatomy, lubrication and
cleaning; part adjustment, wear and replacement. Buying a press,
how to find one, evaluate its condition, and how to move and set
it up will also be covered. Already own a press? Then bring
photos and questions.

Moxon $125/$140

Platen Press
Printing cards is faster and more efficient on a platen jobber.
Learn to operate it safely in this two-day workshop. Lock up a
type form and print an edition of cards.
