at the Center for Book Arts:

Cut, Cover & Stitch: Book Making Made Easy! A great class for beginners! Learn to make four unique handmade books in just one weekend. Explore bookbinding techniques of folding, sewing, cutting, and covering books. Even if you have made books before, you are "bound" to pick up a few new tricks. During the weekend you will produce one non-adhesive book, a decorative sewn structure, a cased in book used for journals, albums or photo frames, and a playful little pocket book. All levels welcome! July 9 & 10 Saturday and Sunday, 10 am to 4pm Benjamin Rinehart $230/$245

Soft Cover Leather Bound Books
Want to make leather bound books but are intimidated or lack
experience?  No
previous experience in bookbinding or leather working is needed
to create a
beautiful soft leather bound book in a weekend.  Add surface
design to the
leather covers using linoleum block cuts to create texture, image
and color.
Decorative endpapers and a deckled edge text block will complete
aesthetic of the book. By the Sunday afternoon, you will have
made one or
two fully designed hand-bound leather books.

NEW! Blade Maintenance
This one-day workshop is designed to give students a grounding in
maintenance and use of the blades used in binding, including
English and
French paring knives, plough blades, and the all rounder clip
knife.  This
is essential knowledge for all good bookbinders, and especially
for students interested in Bookbinding II.

Wood Engraving
Wood Engraving, developed in the late 18th Century by Thomas
Bewick, is
perfectly suited for the illustration of text.  The engraved
image, printed
at the same time and on the same equipment as type, harmonizes
with text and is capable of incredible detail.  It can also stand
alone as a
medium for artistic expression.  Learn the basics of the craft,
and its
modern adaptations.  Engrave and print an edition on the Center's
proof presses.
