Re: [BKARTS] Letters of Introduction
Alice,
No doubt, librarians and collection administrators will weigh in with
opinions. Here is mine.
As the artist, designer and binder, I tend to make these decisions as a
balance of aesthetic and functional requirements. The most basic
conflict: as separate objects the pieces may be lost or damaged, as
included copy they may interfere with the flow of content and
development of the book experience.
In a given situation, can the extra content be designed into the book
to amplify the finished work or to minimally impact the other content?
Can an external method be devised that increases the protection of the
extra parts and helps insure they will remain with the work?
Bookbinding is rife with dictates, rules, norms, traditions... and
those that ignore some or all of that. You are the designer. Bring your
new work into the world with attention to its particular needs and an
understanding of the requirements or expectations of the world. BE the
artist. Find the right solution for your work.

In planning an edition, can anyone advise me about adding an
introduction by an authority?
Can it be added as an insert, rather than as a page in the book? If
the book is letterpress,
must the letter be similarly printed?
Also, if the books are boxed, can the colophon be placed on the inside
back cover of the box or
should it be part of the book itself?
