[BKARTS] New England Workshop (MA)

There are still a couple of spots available in this workshop.

Renate's workshops and presentations are wonderfully organized and enlightening. This one really should not be missed!

A Workshop with Renate Mesmer
organized by the New England Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers

December 3 & 4, 2005
Wellesley College

We are pleased to announce that Renate Mesmer will return to New England to teach this very practical workshop. Participants will learn numerous useful techniques for book and paper conservation, all of which will involve hands-on practice and are meant to be used in every day work.

The book conservation techniques that will be covered include joint tacketing, board slotting, making a primary endband, and repairing a joint from inside. Paper conservation tricks will include staining and dyeing paper, the use of cellulose powder, the use of gossamer tissue, capillary washing, and drying and flattening paper with friction flattening. As time permits other techniques will be demonstrated and discussed. Participants are encouraged to bring objects which can be discussed with the group.
Renate Mesmer is the Assistant Head of Conservation at the Folger Shakespeare Library and the former Director of the Book and Paper Conservation Program at the Centro del bel Libro in Ascona, Switzerland. She has a Masters in bookbinding from the Chamber of Crafts of Palatinate in Germany, and gained experience in conservation during ten years of work as head of the conservation department at the Speyer's State Archives in Germany.

The cost of this workshop is $250 for chapter members ($265 for others). Space is limited, and we expect this workshop to be fill quickly, so please reserve your space early. As with all workshops, space is reserved in the order that checks are received in the mail.
