Generally --- being aware that a signature or other inks could bleed
--- the easiest way to remove an old endsheet is to soak the board (the
split board) in water. If there is an original covering that is to be
saved as well, OR, if the original covering has pigments or dyes that
would bleed in the water, your best bet is to split the board. The
board can be split with any thin tool. The inner split of board and
endsheet can then be placed in a tray of water; then REMOVE THE
remaining split of BOARD from the endpaper while the paper is being
supported on a sheet of Reemay or similar. An alternative is to apply
the water to only the split board and remove the various layers. After
all traces of board and glue have been carefully removed, the paper can
be dried and then lined with a thin sheet of Japanese paper using wheat
starch paste.
Good Luck,
