[BKARTS] Paul Johnson Book Arts Lecture in Los Angeles
The Los Angeles Book Arts Center and Otis Laboratory Press invite you to a
talk by Paul Johnson.
This free lecture, will take place on Thursday, January 26, 2006, at Otis
College of Art & Design, 9045 Lincoln Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90045 in The Forum
(first floor of the Ahmanson Building) . Opening reception 7 pm, talk to
begin promptly at 7:30 pm. Parking is free.
Paul Johnson will pull a library's worth of books - many his own, others
made by British schoolchildren - from a single suitcase! He'll talk about the
endless power of the book as an aesthetic, architectural form and its
special fascination for children of all ages. Everyone will go away with miniature
pop-up books made in the palm of their hand - no tools necessary!
Paul Johnson is internationally recognized for his pioneering work in
developing literacy through the book arts and as a paper and book artist. Author of
nearly twenty titles including A Book of One's Own, Literacy Through the
Book Arts and Pictures and Words Together, (all Heinemann, USA) he ran, until
recently, the Book Art Project from Manchester Metropolitan University (UK).
His movable books are in the collections of the Cooper-Hewett Museum in New
York, the National Gallery, the Library of Congress, the University of
California at Berkeley and Yale University, among other institutions. His work was
selected for Stand and Deliver - an exhibition of edtioned movable books which
recently toured the USA. He exhibits widely and is on the UK Craft Council's
select list of British designer-makers.
The Los Angeles Book Arts Center is a creative, intellectual and technical
resource for artists, collectors, dealers, curators and all individuals
interested in the book and paper arts. It is the center's mission to serve as a
network and clearinghouse for information, education and resources. This is
being accomplished through networking, workshops, lectures, publications,
exhibitions and outreach. Our commitment is to build a strong community as well as
to further individual pursuits in the book and paper arts.
The Los Angeles Book Arts Center (LABAC) was founded in September 2002.
Open meetings, hosted lectures, classes and continuous online discussion groups
all contribute to building a strong book arts community in Los Angeles. The
Los Angeles Book Arts Center offers the broadest possible range of classes in
the book arts, drawing and calligraphy, paste papers and monoprints, book
structures of all types, cases and boxes, and everything between and beyond.
