[BKARTS] Tooling Workshop in Philadelphia

CCAHA, located in Center City, Philadelphia, will host a hands-on gold finishing workshop presented by Stuart Brockman on February 11-12, 2006. This is an unusual opportunity for training from a master bookbinder in an intensive workshop. There is a short description of the workshop at the end of this message. The total enrollment for the workshop will be 12 and there are only 2 spaces currently available.

The workshop fee is $400 per person. Please contact Jim Hinz for further questions or to enroll. jhinz@xxxxxxxxx

Stuart Brockman Workshop on Gold Finishing

Stuart's technique differs from many other binders as a result of his long-term apprenticeship with his father, James Brockman. The elder Brockman completed a six-year finishing apprenticeship at an Oxford trade bindery in addition to working with Sydney Cockerell and Ivor Robinson before opening his own bindery in 1976. Both Stuart and his father are Fellows of England's prestigious Designer Bookbinders and are internationally renowned for their craftsmanship.

This course will demonstrate the methods and skills required to successfully use gold leaf for tooling on leather. Topics to be covered include: gold-tooled labels on goatskin; the use of line fillets and patterned rolls on boards and board edges; lettering a convex spine; the use of pallets, both line and patterned; the use of center tools: and "running up" a gilt spine. The course will include demonstrations followed by bench time. A detailed set of notes will be provided, and assistance and advice will be offered throughout. Each operation will be completed under strict guidance so that the end product meets the highest possible standard.

Reasonable hand skills and a prior knowledge of bookbinding are essential. All materials, equipment, dummy spines and plaquettes will be provided. If participants wish to bring their own tools or items to work on they are most welcome.
