Title:Conservation Technician, Dartmouth College

Hires, trains and supervises 4 - 10 part time student assistants involved in general collections book
repair and pamphlet binding. Oversees work flow of general collections material. Maintains supply
inventory. Performs a variety of conservation treatments on general and special collection items. Assists
in creating and implementing Lab Policies. Assists in disaster recovery of Library materials.

Under supervision of Collections Conservator, performs conservation treatments on general and special collections material. Conservation treatments include but are not limited to disbinding, resewing, constructing conservation cases, rehinging leather boards, rebacking, treating paper by dry cleaning, washing, deacidifiying, tissue mending, tape removal, encapsulation, matting and mounting. Constructs a variety of custom made protective enclosures, including phase boxes, clamshell boxes, portfolios and mats.

Knowledge of conservation principles, practices and procedures. Knowledge of bookbinding history and book structure. Knowledge of current book conservation materials and techniques and demonstrated experience in treatment decision making with ability to select appropriate treatment options. 
Thorough knowledge of Lab policies and procedures.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with others. Manual dexterity and ability to operate and maintain bookbinding tools and equipment. Demonstrated ability to work independently and to exercise initiative and judgment in implementing and carrying out treatments and Lab functions. Keep up to date and maintain awareness of current bookbinding and conservation techniques by reading, subscribing to appropriate list serves and attending lectures/workshops. 
Familiarity with computers (word processing, spreadsheet, research on the web, Library catalog)
