Re: [BKARTS] copyright protection
Thank you to everyone for all this information, it is of great assistance. I
always mean to have this aspect of self-publishing memorized or at least
filed somewhere (ISBN vs copyright, how to protect one's artwork, etc)...but
given the choice on any given day between learning legal things and making
more books, I end up making more books. What can you do.
I didn't clarify that the book to be self published is a limited edition
artist book, and that all I want is to have the content be protected legally
as intellectual property that I created. In the past, I've never been too
worried about copyright protection for my self published books. I figure
limited edition poetry isn't a very hot commodity (yet). However, this book
I've been working on for 12 years, so I have a divested interest in it
remaining "safe" as it begins to find its way in the world. The ISBN
obviously is not the avenue I need to pursue to protect it. (And should I
need an ISBN #, luckily I can take care of that here in Argentina where the
fees are much more user friendly. Strangely enough, it's even an easy
bureaucratic undertaking here, something that is almost unheard of in
Argentina.)
Jill, your email was particularly informative. The gov't copyright website
(http://www.copyright.gov/), however, did say that sending yourself a copy
of the book doesn't protect it particularly. And the other good news is that
I don't have to send them 3 copies, just one. The fee is $30. At least
that's what I understand so far from the www.copyright.gov page...
In any case, thanks again to all. This list serv is a priceless resource.
Best,
Alex Appella

PS Jessica, thanks for your kind words about our slip cases. I think there
are some templates on the Philobiblon site. Or, I've always enjoyed the book
"Books, Boxes and Wraps" by Webberley and Forsyth as a resource.
