Book artists may wish to take a look at the fascinating
introduction to
Nushu texts in the latest issue of PRINT (Mar/April 06, pp. 56-61),
"Flowers in a Gale," by Eve Kahn.
"Nushu" or women's script in Mandarin is a special style of
writing, ten
centuries old, where women could express themselves openly, apparently
since men could not read the 720-odd characters. Kahn's article shows
several examples of this strange elongated script, in beautiful small
booklets that artists may wish to consider in their work.
