While your technical points are surely well-taken, I don't see anything wrong with learning a skill by self-taught practice. The books had very little, if any, value. Matthew learned a lot and is now learning more by putting his work up for review. All in all, I think it was a useful project, and I am sure he will go on to become a great bookbinder and conservator, if he wishes.
