[BKARTS] how to finish wood for spines

Hello all,

I'm working on a long stitch binding that will be sewn through a wood 
spine. I'm writing to ask for your advice on how best to finish the 
wood. The wood I have is 1/4 inch thick white oak.

I'm wondering if people slightly sand the somewhat sharp corners of the 
board. Do you ever use stain or varnish? What about wax?
