Re: [BKARTS] BOOK_ARTS-dirt paper

This reminds me, you can actually make your own pastels. The stuff has to be ground extremely fine of course, but you can do it. I forget at the moment where I saw the pastel making stuff but a Google search would find it I'm sure. For that matter, you could use acrylic mediums, such as gel medium as a vehicle for the dirt.

As part of my thesis project three years ago, I too, wanted to do dirt
inclusion in my 4' X 6' sheets of paper. The rich red dirt from my father's
home town was the inspiration for it. I did two things, I included a ratio
of dirt to pulp and sprayed the sheets, afterwards, when the sheets were
still damp, I rubbed the surface of them with the dirt. Since the dirt was
very rich in minerals and clay, it almost felt as if I was using a pastel
stick on the surface. What I was left with was a nice clay color portion of
my sheet which I then sealed with wax to give it some translucency.

I also have a colleague who uses cement and clay as inclusions for his paper
and he has done it with much success as well. Depending on the inclusion,
the result of the textures are pretty varied.

As a collector of dirt (I've always wanted to start a letter like that) I
was recently sent 100+ or so samples from around the world as birthday
gifts. I've taken a bit from each sample in the collection to form a
witches' brew of world- and states-wide dirt, intending to somehow send a
bit out to everyone who has sent something my way. The initial idea was to
make a sand-paper-type object, but then I thought of incorporating the dirt
directly in the paper itself. For the technical aspects of making the paper
the dirt sample could be quite small--a 10mm would be about the smallest
working sample--or quite large, depending on the paper-making process.
I'd be very curious and grateful to know if anyone had any thoughts on this
project?

Thanks, and best regards,
