Hello All.
I recently purchased several sides of leather, about 4 oz, from a tannery nearby. We are using these to make wrap-around journals by sewing sinew or cord through the spines of the signatures and to the leather, which has been cut to size using a template(you can view them at <http://www.octaviapress.com/wraparound.htm> http://www.octaviapress.com/wraparound.htm).
The problem we've noticed is that the oils from the skin have started seeping into the pages, the spines of the book, and look a lot like foxing - but with oil marks, not acid burns.
Has anyone had any experience with this? Any solutions? I've bound several journals from these skins, and don't really want to write off the lot. I had thought of putting a heavy black card (about 110#) between the signatures and the leather to help prevent this, but this is likely not the best solution, as the oil stains will still show through. We're also considering a really busy Arabic Stone Marble on black card to mask it.
Any thoughts?
R. L. Angus
